Email Open Rate

Definition

Email open rate is the percentage of people who received an email and opened it.

Open rates vary widely, and depend on a range of factors. Some factors that affect email open rates include:

  • The industry of the email sender
  • From name
  • Subject line
  • Time of day
  • Day of the week

Despite the variation in open rates, a good open rate is typically in the 20-40% range.

The email open rate is calculated by dividing the number of emails opened by the total number of email messages sent (excluding bounced emails).
