More than a Resume: What Makes Us Different Makes Us Better

When I started at ActiveCampaign as an Implementation Specialist, I had no prior experience in the role I was hired for. I had worked at another tech company in a position with the same title (but completely different day-to-day), and before that, I was an event planner.

When I met with my now-manager during interviews, I was candid about this, but nervous that it eliminated me from consideration. He didn’t seem phased.

In my first 6 months, I learned more than I have since I was in a classroom in college. I became an expert on the ActiveCampaign platform — setting up automations, importing contacts and mapping them to custom fields, standard formatting practices for text and image blocks when building our email templates. The learning curve was steep, and I often worried that my lack of “tech background” made me unprepared.

What I didn’t realize was that a lot of other people at ActiveCampaign were just like me.

Some of my coworkers include a former pastor, a small business owner-turned-product manager, a semi-professional photographer who has their own sock line on the side, and a recent graphic design graduate who is not working in a graphic design position.

Like me, so many of the people hired at ActiveCampaign come from backgrounds that are not considered “traditional” or consistent with the roles they are in now. And that’s what makes working together every day so exciting. We are a melting pot of knowledge, experience, and points of view. This allows us to work effectively together and learn.

Regardless of past experience, we are all adaptable and eager to iterate on existing practices. We seek answers and are always up for a challenge. And we all love gifs.

At the core of ActiveCampaign are our values. Two of them, in particular, stood out to me when I started, and have been reinforced over and over since I have been employed here:

These values represent the idea that what makes us different makes us better, and that trusting each other’s abilities is what makes teams work and collaboration great.

Having the opportunity to work with people from varying backgrounds, across the Sales, Solutions, Development, Marketing, and People teams has helped me become stronger in my own role. It has also helped me understand how crucial each person’s individual contribution is to the overall success of the company.

I’m happy that my career path has been somewhat non-linear and non-traditional. It has shown me that there is more to finding success than what fits on a page of your resume. It’s your ability to collaborate, adapt, and trust the knowledge and experience of the coworkers around you.
