Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans. Every February, we call attention to the contributions African Americans make to enrich our nation, workforce, and community.

Here are 3 ways ActiveCampaign celebrated Black History Month 2020:

1. We talked about racism in America and the effects of racial science

When our founding fathers were writing the Declaration of Independence, it created a great moral contradiction: How can a country built on freedom and equality have slaves?

During our monthly DEI (Diversity, Equality, & Inclusion) meeting, we talked about the effects of racial science and how race became a powerful social construct woven into the fabric of America.

2. We explored the rich history of the DuSable African American History Museum and the Crispus Attucks Museum

American history is often told as a single story, and the danger of a single story is not that it’s untrue, but rather that it’s incomplete.

We had an opportunity to attend the DuSable African American History Museum in Chicago and the Crispus Attucks Museum in Indianapolis to learn more about the contributions African Americans have made to America — a narrative that is not told often enough.

3. Members of our employee resource group, ActivelyBlack, shared their career journeys with students of ChiTech Academy

ChiTech is an amazing organization that ActiveCampaign has partnered with over the past couple of years, including hosting their Little Black Dress event and their corporate ambassador program. ChiTech connects students with Chicago tech industry experts to provide access to a broad range of career possibilities.

During ChiTech’s field trip to ActiveCampaign this month, ActivelyBlack, one of our employee resource groups, had the privilege of sharing their career journeys with the students.

Though the national observation of Black History Month ends at the end of February, our cultural learning at ActiveCampaign will continue. Special thanks to the DuSable Museum of African American History, the Crispus Attucks Museum, ChiTech Academy, and our employee resource group ActivelyBlack for a rich and deep cultural experience this Black History Month.
