Using Category Fields to Add Extra Information to Your Articles

KnowledgeBuilder allows you to add any number of custom fields to your categories, so that articles posted to those categories will have placeholders for additional, structured information. You can add and edit your category fields by selecting the Fields option from the Categories menu in your KnowledgeBuilder admin panel.

As pictured below, you can choose from a variety of different field types depending on the type of information you would like to include and the way that you would like to have that information entered by your authors.

As an example, let's walk through the process of adding a checkbox group to an article category. To do this, you will simply select the Checkbox Group option from the dropdown menu shown above, and then click the Add Field button.

You will then be presented with the options pictured below, which allow you to set up the custom category field.

The first option, Field Name, is self-explanatory, but some of the other options may seem a bit confusing at first. They are actually quite simple.

Since the type of field we are adding is going to be a list of checkboxes, the Field Values section allows you to add as many values as you would like to have checkboxes for. In the picture above we have already added three checkboxes. To add an additional checkbox to the list, we would click the Add Value button. Each checkbox in the list has two values to be entered: the text that you enter on the left is the label, or the text that you want to be displayed next to the checkbox. The text that you enter on the right is the value, or the text that will be displayed internally within your KnowledgeBuilder admin section when you are browsing or searching by value.

The Bubble Content field allows you to add explanatory text which will tell your article writers and readers what the purpose of the field is and what the information there is for.

The Label Justification setting affects the way that this field's information will be presented to your KB visitors when they read the article. The title of the field can be displayed either on the left side of the information, or above it.

Finally, the For Use In setting allows you to specify which categories this field will be available to. You may select multiple categories by holding down the control button when clicking on each category.

When you are done creating the field, you will find that you article includes the extra information in an easy-to-recognize format for your readers:
