ActiveCampaign Email Marketing Turns Four

In June 2002, around the same time an asteroid barely missed hitting the earth [ ? ], the first version of 1-2-All was released. In January 2003, 1-2-All became a part of ActiveCampaign, Inc and has prospered ever since as the company’s flagship product. Four years to the date of the first incarnation of 1-2-All we look back at the evolution of this product, to put the past into perspective, and celebrate the anniversary of our most popular software product to date. 1-2-All Broadcast E-Mail, as it was exclusively referred to back then, began with a simple, colorful, and easy to use interface. There was nothing terribly distinguishing about this version, just a good mailing list manager at a low price. A commitment to adding more features with enhanced usability allowed 1-2-All to evolve into a much more dynamic application with a friendlier interface.

In August of 2003, a new user interface was implemented along with a scheduled mailing feature that required the setup of cron jobs. In February of 2004, version 3.82 introduced time sensitive auto-responder features, allowing you the ability to set auto responders for each list. A new branding file allowed you to easily modify brand settings by opening a single file. Around the same time a US federal appeals court gave scientists the right to study the 9, 300 year old remains of Kennewick Man, denying the request of American Indian Tribes who sought immediate burial. Also, scientists found what is believed to be the fossilized head of a 400 million year old fly, making it the oldest known insect. [ ? ] Following the release of 1-2-All, development was ongoing and client feedback was expressly used in the product direction. Updates were frequent and the list of features for 1-2-All Email Marketing continued to grow.

1-2-All once again underwent a face lift with version 4.0 which was released in January of 2005. This new version featured an improved sending engine, enhanced subscriber viewing page, enhanced administrative control, and more error checking. As far as the file structure was concerned the admin files were now separated from the public file (you had to go 12all/admin to access the control panels whereas before you just had to go to 12all). The biggest improvement in this new version, in terms of usability, was the introduction of the advanced importer. In previous versions there were quite a few people who ran into problems when trying to import a .CSV file because their format was rejected. 1-2-All Email Marketing now had a user friendly import interface that made it easy for anyone to import .CSV files. Many people upgraded to 4.0 solely for the advanced importer.

In May 2006, ActiveCampaign Email Marketing as it is referred to these days, underwent its most dramatic stage of evolution. The new version’s extensive list of added features and improvements include: restructured code; central authentication format; new language file format; smarty template system; attachment, sending filter, send to a friend, web version, and multi format options for auto responders; unlimited options for sending filters; new reporting options; reason for unsubscribing option added; subscriber, forward to a friend, and auto responder statistical tracking; enhanced custom redirects; branding settings editable from browser; more message personalization options; subscriber notifications that include subscriber field data; better email design capability; and much more. Elsewhere in the world, a 1,500 year old tattooed mummy of a woman in her late 20s is found near Trujillo, Peru. [ ? ]

Its been an amazing four years. Email Marketing has prospered because of its commitment to enhanced functionality and usability. There is no telling what ActiveCampaign Email Marketing will look like in another four years. That’s pretty exciting.

EmailCheck – Improve Email Deliverability

EmailCheck is a new spam check service from ActiveCampaign.

Having legitimate emails blocked by spam filters is a common problem for many small businesses. Using EmailCheck you can check your email campaign against one of the most popular spam filtering packages (SpamAssassin).

EmailCheck will get a number based on your message contents. The greater the number, the greater the chance your message will be misidentified as spam. By using EmailCheck you can better understand how to compose your messages and your overall chance of being incorrectly flagged as spam. This will help you to improve your email deliverability.

EmailCheck is currently beta and there are plans for some exciting new features that will interact with the EmailCheck service.

Two New Email Marketing Add-Ons

With the release of ActiveCampaign Email Marketing Software 4.50 we now have two new email marketing add-ons:

  • Auto-Remind
    Birthdays, contract renewals, newsletter loyalty campaigns, and so much more. With the Auto-Remind add-on you can work with ANY date. Including your subscriber fields and subscription date of your subscriber. With these dates you can match the year, month, and day or just the month and day to send date sensitive mailings. Send birthday emails, anniversary emails, birthday reminders, and other date based emails.
  • Flash Forms
    Flash websites lack the ability to send form data straight into Email Marketing Software to collect subscriber information. Using the Flash Subscription Form Add-On, you can now generate your 12All subscription forms from within the application, and gather subscriber information from your Flash website.

In addition to the two new email marketing plugins we have updated the sync add-on with a number of new features & fixes. Including ability to run the sync via cron, import to unsubscribed list, import into global exclusion list, and more.

Email Marketing Software 4.5 RC 1 is now released!

We are excited to announce that ActiveCampaign Email Marketing Software 4.5 Release candidate 1 has been released. We’ve been working hard the past few weeks correcting the bugs in the early Beta releases and polishing off the new version.

Many thanks to all the people on the forum who have taken the time to test the Beta releases and report bugs and other issues. This definitely speeds up our Beta period, and helps us to get a stable version out to everyone that much quicker.

If you haven’t upgraded yet, you should now consider it. There are tons of new features (too many to list here), and just an overall improved interface. Email Marketing Software 4.5 BETA is finally released!

We are excited to finally release the beta version of Email Marketing Software after months of hard work. There are many features and bug fixes that have been resolved from previous versions, and I know many have been anxiously awaiting the release. I just want to touch on a few of the new features and enhancements.

First of all, we rewrote the entire application using PHP and Smarty template engine. This keeps the logic of the program separate from the layout, and really helps to keep things organized. Plus, you can now customize any email templates you’d like, and should you decided to customize an email template design, you will be looking at mostly HTML code, instead of PHP code jumbled up with HTML. Here’s a guide to HTML email design that will help you.

We’ve also replaced the old built-in HTML editor with the popular FCKEditor. FCKEditor works in most browsers, so you can now edit your messages using Firefox or Opera. FCKEditor has tons of cool features, like easy uploading and storing of images and other files within your email templates.

Another great edition is the ability to subscribe by pipe as well as a POP email account. We’ve added pipe scripts for subscribing, unsubscribing and for processing bounced messages. Pipes have one distinct advantage over POP mail. You see, when you forward mail to a PHP script using a pipe, it processes the message automatically instead of having to wait for a cron script to run. This means that your subscribers get their confirmation messages immediately. In today’s world of instant gratification, this is very important…especially on the internet!

We’ve added a lot of new statistics and reports to the messages archive, so you’ll want to click around in that feature once you upgrade. Also added is new statistics and graphs for autoresponders. One nice thing about the new statistics is that you can see the activity for each individual subscriber…just look up the subscriber in the subscriber list and then click View.

Any time you do a complete rewrite of a system there are going to be some issues here and there. Thank you for your patience as we try to make the Beta period as short as possible. Just post any issues you have to the forum, and we’ll take a look and get things corrected ASAP.

Email Marketing Software Rewrite Begins

Hello, Kent here. I am the newest member of the ActiveCampaign development team, and I am excited to be on board. I recently moved to Chicago, and I am having fun trying to navigate my way around the L trains and such. Chicago really is a great city!

I just recently started converting the Email Marketing software codebase into a newer format that uses Smarty Templates (I’m a big fan), and a more modular structure. The framework for the new version will be just like the Help Desk Software. This will make the code easier to maintain and to add new features. You may notice a slight change in the overall layout and menus, but the features will work just the same. We’ll also be adding some new features, but more on those later.

A very interesting thing we’re working on in the marketing department is writing case studies about our exceptionally successful clientele. I recently completed the newest case study, which explains how Backpacker Tours Australia uses ActiveCampaign Email Marketing to target niche markets, resulting in a loyal following of thrill-seekers and leisure-time travelers alike.

The Future of Email Marketing Software

We are currently in the planning stages for the next large update of Email Marketing, version 4.2. This new update will include a number of important updates in regards to our email template system and the ability to add plug ins and custom coding into any of the admin pages.

Some of the items to be likely included in 4.2 are listed in our development tracker.

If you have any feature requests or issues you would like addressed please post them to the bug tracker or forum in the near future to have them considered for 4.2.

Due to the extensive scope of changes and additions we are not setting a date for this update at this time.
