Feature Overview: Cross-tab Reporting

A major development for iSalient is that we have added crosstab functionality to reports. Showing a report with a crosstab lets you view only the responses from people who gave a specific answer to a question. For example, if one of your survey questions is which country are you from, you can create a report that shows responses only for those who are from the US, or only those from Canada, etc…

Crosstabulation is where you can view survey results that come from a subset of people. For example, let’s say I have a survey that asks people 3 questions: Gender, Age, and Favorite Hobby. While the survey results will tell me what people’s favorite hobbies are in general, it would be much more useful if I could break it down further so I can view hobbies for all males between 25-35, or hobbies for females between 40-60. Crosstab lets you do that.

Crosstabs can be added by going to Reports -> Add New Crosstab. Type the name of the crosstab (for internal viewing purposes) and choose a survey, and then save. Next, you can choose a question, a condition, and then an answer. So in our case I would choose “Gender”, “Answer is equal to”, and then enter “Male” (or select a suggestion). Then I could add another condition by choosing “AND” or “OR”, and then choosing “Age” for the question, etc…

It is easy to create a set of conditions for a question and even join those conditions to another question. Click on Conditions sand then select a question that you want to add crosstab functionality to. Conditions that you can set include Answer is equal to, Answer is not equal, Answer contains, Answer does not contain, Answer starts with, Answer ends with, Question has been answered, and Question has not been answered. You can set this using suggested answers to questions. You can then join this condition to another question by using an And or Or condition.

Now we are ready to view the results. Click on Reports -> Survey Responses, and choose a survey. If there are any crosstab views for a selected survey then they will appear in the section below. Choose the crosstab filter and then hit submit. The charts and graphs you now see will contain ONLY those responses that match the criteria in the crosstab view.

The Promise of 2.0 for Affiliate Marketing

For better or worse, its gone from cliché to necessary to discuss the modern online landscape in terms of web 2.0.  Indeed, web 2.0 has become a catch-all phrase that is used to describe the rise of blogging, RSS feeds,  interactive online communities and other new technologies, web sites and services.

Forums allow affiliates to interact but they can also be widely used to disseminate misinformation.  Blogs on the other hand have tied affiliates closer to merchants as they can be used as an efficient means of delivering affiliate members with incisive information. The rise of Web 2.0 has resulted in effective detection and weeding out of harmful practices towards affiliates.   Due to lack of detection and prevention, per-click commission based sites fell victim to scams involving unscrupulous individuals or programs clicking on commissionable links.  Google, a name that has emerged at the forefront of 2.0, helped restore commissionable links with its AdSense technology.  AdSense helps ensures equitable compensation for commissionable links.

The per-click business is once again alive and thriving. In the past, Adware posed a threat to affiliates as it often overwrote their tracking cookies and resulted in a decline in commissions.   Adware usually provides no useful to the oft unaware user that has it running on their computer.  Another threat was the use of various applications which redirected affiliate links.  Today, various technologies provide security for affiliates by allowing them to link directly to their site.  This removes the threat of redirection or rewriting of cookies.   The names you should be aware of here are FusionQuest, KowaBunga Technologies, and Link Connector.

SupportTrio CSS Update

We just released SupportTrio 2.63.2 and it introduces a rather handy new “feature.”  With the latest version the public side is entirely CSS based.  That should help a lot with template customizations and upgrading SupportTrio (with customizations kept). We also added an extended Reset Desk feature that now allows you to choose what part of the desk you wish to reset (so you can choose to keep CSS customizations, but to reset templates, for instance).

Also: Please note that there is no longer a limit on satellite desks!   Additionally, the restrictions for lite licenses have decreased allowing you more departments and email parsers than before.

Minor changes were made to the admin side as we slowly roll out some design and layout changes.  We are continuing to make minor changes to increase the usability and style.

If you should have any questions or feedback regarding our recent changes just let us know!

How Often Is Too Often

How often to send mailings is a question that every email marketer asks at some point. You may feel hesitant about sending too often because you are fearful of irritating your subscribers. Your first consideration should be to establish regularity. Having regularly scheduled mailings is important for effective email marketing. As a rule of thumb you want to establish a frequency of no less than once a month. If you mail less than a month you risk being forgotten about by your subscribers. How often you send mailings also depends on the content that you are using. Why are you doing this? Are you promoting goods, updating clients, disseminating propaganda for special interests, selling a politician or a political party, etc.? Ask what’s in it for your readers. How often does your newsletter’s content change and how long do your readers take to react. The A/B split add-on is a good tool for segmenting your audience to see what content your subscribers respond to. The A/B split add on sends out two separate versions of a mailing which you can use to measure what gets a better response. Furthermore, you may want to segment your audience based on frequency. Some of your audience may respond to more frequency while others are more comfortable with a monthly mailing. This underscores what we have been talking about all along, know your audience.

You can let readers decide for themselves what they feel most comfortable with. Some newsletters give readers the option to opt-in for daily or weekly delivery during sign up. Which brings up the next question you need to ask yourself. What can you handle? A daily newsletter is very resource dependent when compared to a monthly. It may be best to start with a monthly newsletter and work from there. You do not want to rush out poorly written daily material when a monthly newsletter that is well written is more likely to captivate your audience. Are you mindful of the latest trends? This is where it becomes important to look at statistical tracking in your message archive. Check to see that your open reads haven’t fallen off the face of the earth. Or, that your unsubscribes haven’t gone through the roof. There are many considerations when choosing a frequency. Remember to use your audience as a guide and the rest should follow.
